DENVER — One hundred and fifty years ago on this day, after 17 years and five previous attempts, U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant signed a proclamation that officially admitted Colorado as the 38th state in the Union.

Colorado gained the “Centennial State” nickname for becoming a state in the country’s 100th year of independence from Great Britain.

Celebrations and events are happening throughout Colorado today and this year, including specialized drone shows across the state meant to salute Colorado in a visual light display.

Rocky Mountain PBS combed through the last 13 years — and 135 episodes — of Colorado Experience to map out the state’s history to celebrate the sesquicentennial.

"The Colorado Experience collection is remarkable in the breadth and depth of Centennial State knowledge it offers," said Jason Hanson, the chief creative officer at History Colorado. "Watching every episode would make someone the most knowledgeable Coloradan in just about any room."

Check out the timeline below to see which episodes we selected as covering some of the most impactful pieces of Colorado history.
